Kid to Kid Franchise Review: Meet Shawna Duplantis
Why a mother felt compelled to leave a career to open a resale clothing franchise to serve families in her community
Atascocita, Texas, is a small suburb northeast of downtown Houston – though just because the population is a little over 65,000, doesn’t mean that children’s clothes come any cheaper. For the 9,000+ families living in Atascocita, having a place where they can buy high-quality children’s clothes at a fraction of retail prices – and even more importantly, sell the clothes back for cash as their children outgrow them – meets a tremendous need. Enter Kid to Kid resale clothing franchise.
Shawna Duplantis, owner of the Kid to Kid franchise in Atascocita, is the reason the store is there. When Duplantis celebrated her grand opening in August 2016, she could already sense the enthusiasm around her business:
“I am so happy to provide such a needed store within our community,” she said in 2016. “It is so great seeing moms coming together, passing along great deals to one another. From baby showers to birthday gifts, we’re pleased to offer a large variety of new and gently used items for our customers.”
Fast-forward four years later, and her business has been growing ever since.
“The community has been so appreciative, and so have my customers,” Duplantis says. “This business grows every year. It’s such a positive experience to own a business that makes a difference, and I’m excited about the future.”
Duplantis joined the Kid to Kid franchise family with zero experience as a business owner. She left her full-time job as a property manager, where she supervised apartment complexes. As the mother of two daughters, Duplantis loved buying cute clothes for her kids and discovered that resale clothing was the only way to make it affordable. When she discovered Kid to Kid, she knew it was a perfect match.
“Having two girls, I loved to dress them up,” she says. “It costs a fortune to buy clothes for your kids, especially when they grow out of them so fast. When I found resale clothing, it provided me with a way to dress my kids beautifully and save money at the same time. Kid to Kid has made it so easy to transition out of my day job and into this business. The model is so easy to understand and the support is phenomenal – this brand really has your back.”
Kid to Kid has been helping entrepreneurs like Duplantis thrive in business since 1992. In three decades of business, Kid to Kid has built one of the most comprehensive support platforms in the entire franchise industry. With a streamlined business model that is easy to manage, Kid to Kid focuses provides marketing support, ongoing coaching, mentorship and state-of-the-art technology to ensure that our franchisees have the tools they need to thrive in business. We take our credo of Better Together seriously, and our corporate support staff of more than 40 people, as well as our entire franchise network, is always ready to lend a hand, answer a question and pitch in.
“I’m really impressed with everything they support us with,” Duplantis says. “The franchise has great training modules, including hands-on training, and there’s still a lot of continued support. In fact, a support rep recently visited my store and revamped my inventory again – inventory is the most important part of this business, and you really need to stay on top of it to be successful. So being able to get help when I need it helps me a lot.”
In August 2020, Duplantis will celebrate her fourth year in business, and she’s already looking to expand.
“I want to keep growing the business,” she says. “Of course I want to add another location. It was always our plan to add another location. What’s most exciting for me is the fact that our business is successful enough for me to not have to be there every day – which is very nice! I have a trusted team that I rely on, and they’re a big part of why this business continues to grow.”
